Mr. Irving, My name is David Irving. I have been searching for the connection of my family to the Irvings of Bonshaw for many years, and was very excited to find your post. I'm quite an amateur at this, but have pieced together some parts, which I'll describe below. If you feel you can be of any assitance, please feel free to contact me. My great grandfather was Matthew Stanley Shaw Irving. He was born Aug 1883 in Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland. He was married to my great grandmother Emily Gertrude Butterworth on Nov 8 1906 in Minnedosa, Manitoba, Canada. He was killed at Ypres, Belgium, during WWI, on Jul 28 1917. I have information of which I am not 100% confident, that Matthew Stanley Shaw Irving's parents were Matthew Irving and Lucy Shaw. Matthew was supposedly born 25 Dec 1832, in Annan, Dumfries, Scotland. He was married to Jane Dickson (b. 13 Dec 1838, Ruthwell, Dumfries) on 3 Jun 1864 in Ruthwell, and the marriage produced four or five children- Margaret Dalgliesh Irving (b. 21 Mar 1866, Ruthwell) Mary Jane Irving (b. 6 Jan 1868, Ruthwell) William Irving (b. 30 Apr 1869, Ruthwell) Janet Dickson Irving (b. 2 Jan 1871, Ruthwell) and possibly Elizabeth Irving (b. 1879, Dornock) Listed in 1881 Census for Dornock Parish as a ploughman. Matthew, wife Jane and children were living in Burns Cottage (2 rooms w/ one or more windows). Jane apparently died @ 1880 (presumably after the above census), for Matthew married Lucy Shaw @ 1880. Matthew Stanley Shaw Irving was born Aug 1883. I've also found a note that indicates Matthew and Lucy may have lived and/or been married in Withington, Manchester, England, but I can't really confirm this. I have no info on Lucy Shaw other than her name, so perhaps she was from Manchester (mother's name might be Stanley?). I have even more nebulous information listing Mathew's parents as William Irving (b. 1795, Dornock) and Margaret Dalgliesh. They were supposedly married 11 May 1831 in Annan, Dumfries. William's parents were supposedly Andrew Irving and Mary Graham. All generations beyond Matthew Stanley Shaw Irving should be considered suspect, but the repetition of names such as Shaw and Dalgliesh gives me some confidence in them. The last bit of information I have is the family oral history that we are decended from the Irvings of Bonshaw, supported by my grandfather's (Matthew S. S.'s son Lawrence's) possesion of a copy of "The Book of the Irvings" by John Beaufin Irving, dedicated to Matthew S. S. by the author with the words "From your chief". This is circumstantial evidence, at best, but if you can help me prove or disprove it, I would be thrilled to hear from you. Thank you, David Irving (perfessordave@hotmail.com) Notify Administrator about this message?
