This is very interesting. My ancestor, Robert Irving, was born in in 1732 in Kirklinton which is only about a mile or so from Longtown. He married Jane Blecketer whose father was, I believe, a miller (ref. Mill Hill?).

I am descended from his daughter Dorothy, but he had three sons, William, Christopher, and Thomas any of whom could well have been the father of Alexander. It is particularly interesting that he had children Robert and Jane (possibly his grandparents) and William (father or uncle?), Ann, and Margaret (aunts?). Only Peter and Janet are named from, presumably, their mother's line.

Of course, there were a lot of Irvings in Cumberland, but all this is rather suggestive.

Alexander was possibly the son of Thomas or Christopher who were both Surgeons, I believe, the latter in the Royal Navy. They were born somewhere about 1760, so that would figure.

The Irving name has been carried down my family line as an occasional middle name - as in my case except that my mother spelled it as Irvin. My own youngest son has Irving as his first name.

Do you know anything else about Alexander?
