James IRVINE, b. abt 1717, IRELAND m. Janatt LAWSON (Unproven), believed to be brother to Margaret m. Dr. Ephraim MCDOWELL, and other orginal IRVINE sibs who settled in PA and southern Virginia, are my 4th gg parents. He was "Surveyor," a notable appointment in early colonial days given the immense undertaking and responsibility for the creation of roadways. He was also a Justice and the owner with his wife, JANNAT, of IRVINE's FERRY which was chosen by Gen. Nathaniel GREENE as the site for his famous planned retreat from CORNWALIS in Feb. 1781.
James and Jannat were evidently close friends of John BOYD m. Margaret LAWSON (unproven) whose wifes where supposedly sisters.
