My research goes back to Theodore, DBU,
His son Jocobus, his son Jocob, then Peter Irmen, 20 Apr 1803, his son: Nicholas, 20 Oct 1843, his son: William Nicholas Irmen, 24 Oct 1877.
Much of the family history is at St Boniface Cem., and St Joseph Cem. Where I have spent many hours on one of my visits to Chicago. I would have to say most of the Irmen's in Illinopis as well as many in Michigan are all related.
Michael's off-springs (MN) later went into North Dakota, Montana and then on up into Canada.
Nicholas, the first in Chicago was a tailor and after the big Chicago File, did very well for the family.
Peter is son was a Chicago Policeman.
I am still trying to place your father. Herbert R., I don't have listed but I do have Wlliam N. Irmen's children.
They are: Paul N., Frank Ralph, both born in Iowa, John Roger, Bernard Roman,Caroline (Burdahl), Gerald Martin, and Jeanette.
