You are far from being alone. I've asked this question privately but have never received a reply. He suddenly appeared as John B. Irey and no one can remember where it came from. I suspect someone saw 'b.' representing 'born' and mistakenly copied it as his middle initial. As genealogists, we've all done that - or something similar.
However, I also know that some families are lucky to have documentation unknown to others - with more being uncovered everyday. The only thing that those of us who have this question is asking - PLEASE share the source. If you recheck your records and find that you've made an error or can't find the documentation - correct it so future genealogists won't be using that error as fact.
