Hello Warren,
I am interested in the theory of your Irish colleague. Just because John had the surname Jackson does not necessarily mean that he came from Co. Wicklow. Griffith's Valuations of Ireland (1848-64) http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.phphttp://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php shows the surname in several counties. John could possibly have come from the north of Ireland as Surname Search http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfmhttp://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm shows counties Antrim, Armagh and Down had a higher number of Jacksons than does Co. Wicklow. The Rebellion of '98 may help give a clue placing his county of origin. The ship "Lord Cornwallis" should also help...do you know from which port the ship sailed?
All the Best, Chris
