My great grandfather, James Tompkins was born March 16, 1820,in Wicklow Cty, Ire. About 1833-36 he emigrated to Ontario, Canada with his parents Denis and Caroline (McGuire) Tompkins both probably born in the 1790's; and 6 brothers. So far, I have tenatively identified 5 of the 6 brothers. Peter, b. 1822, John, b. 1823, Jonas, b 1826, Patrick, bd unknown and two other brothers, names and birthdates unknown. James and Patrick emigrated to Oswego County, New York and set up a shoe shop. In 1857, James moved to Minnesota at Lake City, Wabasha County. It is thought that Patrick also emigrated to Minnesota, although no further record is found of Patrick. In 1872, he moved to Martinburg township near Fairfax, MN. In 1850, James married Eliza Stanton b. 1825 in County Mayo, Ireland. (daughter of John and Ann (Acton) Stanton). James died in Fairfax, Minnesota on July 9, 1913. Eliza died in Fairfax, Minnesota on July 2, 1877. They Had the following children: Mary Susan Tompkins, b. 1850; John Tompkins, b. 1852; Ann lucy Tompkins, b. 1854; James Henry Tompkins, b. 1856; Michael Tompkins, b. 1858; Joseph Thomas Tompkins, b. 1864;
Elizabeth Tompkins, b. 1865. Clara Frances Tompkins, b. 1869
My Grandfather was James Henry, born 12/7/1856, Married in 1885 to Julia Ann Maxwell. They had 10 children. Fred, b.1886; Frank, b. 1888 John, b. 1890, William, b. 1892; James, b. 1895; Robert, b. 1897; Mary, b. 1900; Gerald, b. 1904; Julia (twin), b. 1904; Fabian, b. 1908. Fabian was my father.
I have a great deal of information on families of James Henry and Joseph Thomas Tompkins. Little is known of the other brothers of James Sr., although Jones, b. 1826 moved to Neillsville Wisconsin with a son of John's (b. 1823), named James, b. 1850. Some of the brothers probably remained in Ontario, Canada, or the upper New York area.
