Hi Doug, I just came across your message of 2007 re O'Learys from Wexford. My ancestors came from Clonegal which is on the Wexford-Carlow border. My great-great-great grandfather, James O'Leary and his family are buried there. He was born in 1856 and he died in 1842. I can trace most of his offspring except one. He had a son Denis, who was born in around 1800. Denis married and he emigrated to the US afterwards with his wife and two children. A note on our family archives (which seems to be the only reference we have to him) indicates that he went to a place called Rawden or Rawdon, which may be in Nova Scotia or near New Brunswick, New Jersey. I am not sure from your message if one of the names you mention it that of the O'Leary in your family who emigrated. If so it must be a different person as we already have a Patrick in that generation of our family and he was my great-great grandfather. However I thought it was worth contacting you.
The O'Leary clan has a DNA project running on ancestry.com, of which I am a part. A DNA test costs about 200. It is not cheap. It is very interesting though. We have over 60 persons at this stage who have participated. So far there has not been any very close match to my DNA profile although it has proved that we did originate from Rosscarbery along with the other O'Leary groups, some of whom fled over the mountain and set up base at Inchigeelagh, where there is still a large number of people with that name. We are hopeful that, as the project expands, we will be able to fill in the jigsaw puzzle and trace the movement of the clan. I am particularly interested in getting to the bottom of the puzzle as to how the O'Leary branch in Wexford got there.
Regards,
Peter O'Leary, Malahide, Co. Dublin.
