Lowe in Kilkenny West, Toberclare and Glassan

I'm looking for more information on the activities and family history of those of my Lowes who lived in Glassan, Toberclare, and Kilkenny West townlands, Kilkenny West parish, east of a big lake, just north of Athlone, in the 18th and 19th centuries.

All through the 19th century, Lowes who were centered around Moate and had nothing at all their entire lives to do with Kilkenny West, kept being taken there and buried.

Very occasionally, they were born there.

In Griffiths Evaluation, in 1854, just one of them, a Robert, lived there. He rented four acres of land, and a second house and garden, whatever it was that he did for a living.

Now I find out that the mysterious Nathaniel Lowe, an owner of properties all over southern Westmeath, in Co Galway, and elsewhere in Ireland, who was on the Westmeath Grand Jury (legislative body) in the 1750's, and owned land in Moate in 1800, had land dealings in Athlone on a continuous basis, and founded the large estate of Lowville in eastern Galway, apparently owned an estate in Kilkenny West parish. Someplace northeast of the village of Glassan, he built a 58 foot high tower on a 300 foot high hill, so that people could signal him on his estate at Lowville 28 miles away, or something of the sort. He may have built it the year after he built Lowville; it has the date 1769 on it.

First of all, I'm interested in why he thought he needed his shepherd to signal him in Galway, or is it merely that he wanted to be able to see oen property from the other, and how well did this work. One version says the shepherd was signally him with flags. Now, the Lowe family in general did have some serious issues with their sanity.

Second, I'd like ot know exactly what properties who of the family had in Kilkenny West Parish.

Third, I'd like to know whatever genealogcial information is known about them; who of the family first settled there, and through who was land transferred?

Who did Nathaniel sell his land to? Or did he not own it?

Is there anyone in particular in that area it is a particularly good idea to just call up and ask?

Thanks1

Yours,
Dora Smith
