The Gambles of Strabane, Tyrone
Posted by: Susan Karayanis (ID *****6324) Date: January 01, 2011 at 08:01:33
  of 1713

I am trying to find anything I can find on the Gambles of Strabane, Tyrone. I do know my Gambles were merchants by trade. The male given names of which I am aware were William, Robert and John (died 1707). I am descended from Sidney Gamble, my 7th G-Grandmother; probably daughter of John Gamble. Sidney Gamble married Samuel Smith of Ballymagorry, Tyrone. They immigrated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1728.

Sidney was named after a Brittish officer with a surname of Sidney. This officer was wouunded in the War of William of Orange and was taken in by the Gamble family. During his recovery the officer endeared himself to the family to such an extent that when their female child was born, the Gambles named her Sidney. Many generations have since named their daughters Sidney.
