MONSIGNOR JOHN MURPHY DIES
A Mass of Christian Burial was held yesterday at Mount St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Seattle for Monsignor John Murphy, who died Wednesday at age 90. Murphy, who was retired, had previously served as pastor of St. Peter's Church and St. John's Church in Seattle
Born in Emly, County Tipperary, Ireland, he was ordained in his homeland to the Roman Catholic priesthood for the then-Diocese of Seattle in 1919.
Seven months after his ordination he was appointed curate of Assumption parish in Bellingham. He became a U.S. citizen in 1926.
Murphy served in Bellingham in a variety of posts from 1920 to 1928 and from 1934 to 1935. From 1928 to 1934, he was pastor of Holy Family parish in Kirkland.
He was pastor of Sacred Heart parish in Tacoma for two years before serving as pastor of St. Peter's for nearly 30 years.
His next assignment was as pastor of St. John's where he stayed from 1966 until he retired in 1971.
Murphy was given the title of monsignor in 1969. He served as chaplain at St. Joseph Residence in West Seattle for three years after his retirement.
He was buried at Calvary Cemetery.
