death in U.S.A.of Mrs. Bryan Gilgan formerly templeboy about 1857
information from a recent Sligo Champion newspaper
news of 150 years ago:
The Champion reported the death in America of a 107 year old woman from Templeboy.She was Mrs. Bryan Gilgan, 1006 Union Avenue,New York,formerly of Rathglass,Templeboy.She only emigrated to America when she was about 80 years old,to join her family in New York.A report of her death went on :"She enjoyed splendid health till within a few days of her death and retained the possession of her faculties to the last.She prided herself on the fact that she had never taken a drop of medicine during her life.She took part in the rejoicings over Catholic emancipation and often recalled blood curdling incidents of the horrors of the famine ,and howher country people suffered during the first half of the 19th century from goverment and landlord oppression. She had the unique privilege of living to see 4 generations of children. She had 8 children,24 grandchildren,15 great grand children, and 2 great-great grandchildren"
