Can't help but love those Irish!!I checked the records at the Sligo Heritage Center and the earliest birth listed for a John Brett was in 1848.Did you find a wife and/or children listed with him in the 1900 Census?You may also want to try the County he was listed as living in and see if they have any naturalization records or land records, etc..If he was naturalized, it would have probably been around 1870, as I've found that it was at least a 5 yr process.You couldn't even apply until you had lived in the U.S. for two years and then there was a 3 yr timeframe to get the final naturalization.
There were Brett's from around the Dromore West, Ballymote, Tobercurry and Skreen areas of Co. Sligo.Most were Roman Catholics but there were also some that were Protestants.
