I don't know if this is helpful or not but I have found a John McDermott family in Illinois in the 1870s and 1880s. I suspect this John McDermott was born in the 1830s or so in Ireland. My connection is that my 3 great grandfather, Patrick Dunican wrote a letter to his family while he was fighting in the Civil War and mentioned giving his love to the John McDermott family. I believe that perhaps his sister married John McDermott.
I know that Patrick is from County Roscommon as that is where he reported he was born in his re-enlistment information when he re-upped for the war. It is also in his pension application for a pension long after the war. The Dunicans moved to Illinois, I suspect, following the McDermotts.
Lookm for the McDermotts in the 1860 and 1870 census in Illnois and see if that fits with your John Andrew McDermott.
