O'Brien, Egan, Walsh, Bannon, Doyle, Daly - South Roscommon Milling Families

"Milling on the Crannagh Cross River" by Edward Egan, the well-known local historian and administrator of Drum Heritage Centre, Athlone, is the name of a recently published book that traces the history of water-powered corn mills situated at Milltown Pass, Atteagh, Currantotan, Cloonakilla, Bealnamulla, Monksland and Crannagh along the sixteen mile stretch of the Crannagh Cross River. The mills were owned by the above families. The book contains lots of genealogical detail regarding the transfer of ownership down the centuries and the marriages that took place between members of these families. It is also a fascinating history of a once thriving but now lost industry.

: Researchers who wish to obtain a copy of the book should contact the author by e-mail at countedward@eircom.net
