Griffiths Valuation has only 1 James Groves recorded, in 1860. He was renting land in Gallagh townland, in the parish of Clontibret. That’s just to the east of the intersection of the modern N2 and the R184 at Kilcrow, south of Monaghan town. He was renting 2 houses and a total of about 9 acres of land (properties 11 – 13 on Griffiths).

If you have no other leads, and you know your families denomination, you might want to search the local parish records to see if this is the right family. You might find Isaac's baptism.
Only 17 Groves in Monaghan in the 1901 census, all Presbyterian, so perhaps that was your family denomination.
