This 1930 California census entry may be your Julia Burns from Co. Monaghan -- assuming you thought she "may" have been married .... and had a child? With the son's name "Patrick" it certainly seems likely he could have been named for a grandfather. I couldn't find them in 1920 census as "Burns" or "Dodson." Also searched for anyone named "Patrick" born c. 1913 Washington, but found no matches of a boy with mother "Julia." The census indexes have many women named "Julia" born c. 1888 Ireland with various surnames, though. Will be glad to search again if you have any other relatives' names with whom they may have been living at the time.

1930 census - Sacramento, California - District 76, address: 1421 Eleventh Street

6 families ennumerated in one house (all renting their residences, so obviously it's an apartment house):

Family # 140
Jean McLean - head - white female - age 36 - single - born Ohio - father born Scotland, mother born Wales - occupation: stenographer, dry goods store

Family # 141
Julia Burns - head - white female - age 42 - divorced - age 23 at first marriage - born Northern Ireland, father & mother born Northern Ireland - emigrated to U.S. in 1907 - occupation: clerk, railroad office

Patrick J. Burns - son - white male - age 17 - single - born Washington - father born New Jersey, mother born Northern Ireland - occupation: messenger, railroad office

Other families & individuals in the house are SWEETHURST(?), NEEDHAM, BROWN, MURPHY, COHEN, BUSENNIUS(?).

Washington (state) births, 1907-1919, indexed on-line, have no child "Patrick" (Burns, Dodson or other surname) born to a mother named Julia (Burns, Dodson or other surname) in 1913 or within several years of 1913. However, there is this person born 7 January 1913 (see Patrick Burns' death record with this same birth date)

Name: Elmer Burns Thurston
Birth Date: 7 Jan 1913
LOCATION: Spokane City
Sex: Male
Race: White
Father's name: Fred Thurston
Mother's name: Julia Burns

This same child is also indexed under surname "BURNS":

Name: Elmer Burns Burns
Birth Date: 7 Jan 1913
LOCATION: Spokane
Sex: Male
Race: White
Father's name: Julia Burns
Mother's name: Fred Thurston
Image Filename: 1410

Could this be "Patrick" whose name was changed later?
