In Reply to: POGUE, CONNOLLY, MONAGHAN, IRELAND, 1800's by Wendy Cahill of 886

Hi Wendy, I have a copy of the marriage record of Thomas Pogue & Mary Connolly. My good friends are James, Wm, Charles & Hugh Pogue, sons of the later Robert Edmund Pogue, son of Wm Pogue, who was son of Thomas Edmund Pogue, son of Thomas Pogue & Mary Connolly. Genealogy is my passion so at Jim's request, I've rounded up a bit of Pogue Family Info. Their Marriage Record is a bit difficult to decipher. Thomas & Mary were married May 23, 1861, at the Presbyterian Church (cant make out the name) in the Parish of Aughoboy??, District of Cootehill, Co Monaghan. Pogue is spelled two ways in the marriage record - Pogue & Pollock (I understand the Irish pronounce both names the same - also Polk). Thomas Pogue is recorded as being the son of Thomas Pogue of Drumhullock, & Mary Connolly, the daughter of William Connolly of Craneway. "The General Valuation of Rateable Property in Ireland, County of Monaghan," 1860, lists two Thomas Pollocks, Sr & Jr, & separated by only one neighbour. They were to be found in the Barony of Monaghan, Parish of Kilmore, Townlands of Tullynarney. Probably their own acreage was called Drumhullock. In the old microfiche version of the International Genealogical Index, I found an Anna Bella Pogue, born in June 1826, and a Sarah Jane Pogue, born Apr 1832, both at Clones, Monaghan, & both the daughters of Thomas Pogue & Anne McMinn. Unfortunately they are the only two children of Thomas & Anne who have been recorded as such. However, I feels its highly likely that Thomas Pogue [Pollock] Sr & Anne McMinn were the parents of your Thomas Pogue. My Pogue friends were familiar with the story of the Huguenot origin of their name. However, with the Pollock name connection, I highly doubt it, unless a Pogue ancestor had married a Huguenot woman. Cheers! Count Caragata
