James Matthews & Mary McGill
James Matthews departed Ireland, Co. Down, in 1718 on the Ship Elizabeth, along with a number of notables. Mary McGill's parents were also located in the same area. I believe in the cluster of Matthews & McGills around Dromore. I have DNA tested and it lead we Matthews in the USA to this couple. There were 2 separate lines of Matthews from which we spawn c. 1608 and we are not certain which. One was the Thurles branch--Sir George Mathew & Elizabeth Poyntz. The other was the Robert Mathew branch that first settled in Glenarm, Ballymena in Larne. Both branches came to Ireland from Wales at the behest of King James' and his colonies. We are hoping to learn the parentage of James Matthews and Mary McGill. Clearly, DNA has not caught on in Britain to the same extent it has in the USA so we have not been able to match with anyone there and our primary research is also at a dead end. If any of this sounds familiar and you have information on these families, we would appreciate anything you might know.
