Thanks, Fred. This is similar to what the genealogist at the National Archives in Dublin. In the case of my husband's ancestors, the third boy was not named after his father. Rather, the last boy (the fifth son) was given his father's name. In the House Book records that we searched on microfilm at the National Archives, the father's name was entered as head of the house. Underneath the name Philip with the mother's maiden name was written and then crossed out. This puzzled us. We appreciate your taking the time to reply.
