Batterby, Ireland c.1800
I have a Catharine Batterby I am researching. Info leaves me somewhat skeptical of accuracy. She is Irish, possibly Dublin. Note from a family member insists spelling of surname as Batterby, with Battersby family members in area (Genesee Co, NY, USA).
No proof has been found of marriage to a John Hassett (1806 IRE-1881 NY).
Family emigrated from Dublin, Ireland, steerage class on the barque Huma, arrived in NY March 26, 1849 with husband John Hassett, children Ellen, Mary, & John Jr. 2 y/o daughter Catherine died at sea 3 days prior to arrival. Surname spelled Hasset on ship's records. Other passengers on board surname Hasset & Hassit - unknown whether related.
Hassett kids - Ellen b.c. 1840 IRE, Catharine b.8/3/1841 IRE (my gg-grandmother), John Jr. b.1843, & Catherine c.1847 IRE - d. 1849 at sea).
A Hugh Hassett, 15, arrived a year later, moved in with them, then with another Hassett family in the county. He remained in that second area. A Hugh Battersby was also in the area, a relative it was stated. I had found a Hugh Battersby & wife baptized a daughter Catharine/Catherine, c.1800 but no proof that it was my ancestor.
Recent mtDNA: Haplogroup K ..... and matching all K1c2 (I plan to follow up with full sequence testing). Many matches of other Irish women.
I'd like to track Catharine's story, and seek her maternal lineage farther back, as well as John Hassett - of which there are presently so many I don't know which one is my John Hassett. I'm somewhat skeptical that Catharine's only 4 children were born when she was 40-47 y/o. I question whether this is her first marriage, whether there were older children (and what happened to them), and perhaps even whether Batterby/Battersby was her maiden name or from a first marriage.
