Based on Kathleen's info - his age & the year transported, wonder if this might be him?? Possible the 1818 should have been 1819??
JAMES SUMMERS, Theft > grand larceny, 7th July 1819.
1050. JAMES SUMMERS was indicted for stealing, on the 31st of May , one hammock, value 2 s., and three blankets, value 3 s. , the goods of Thomas Spittle .
THOMAS SPITTLE . I am a mariner . On Sunday evening I came ashore, and brought my hammock - I left it in a stable, in High-street, Poplar . I missed it next morning, and on Thursday I found it exposed for sale at a broker's at Poplar. I found the blankets at Monaghan's. The prisoner was apprehended that day.
JOHN GILL . I keep the Sun and Sawyers, public-house, where the things were put. On Monday morning, about seven o'clock, I found the staple of the padlock drawn.
ISMEY MONAGHAN. I live at Poplar. The prisoner came to me on Monday morning, between six and seven o'clock, and said he had just come from Gravesend. He left the blankets with me to wash - he lodged with me about a week before.
JOHN WEALE . I am an officer. I apprehended Monaghan, and took her to the watch-house - the prisoner was watching - he went up the street, and I took him just by the watch-house. I found a hammer, which fitted the marks on the stable.
(Property produced and sworn to.)
Prisoner's Defence. I got them from on board an Indiaman.
GUILTY . Aged 47.
Transported for Seven Years .
Second Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Common Sergeant.
