Hi David,
I agree with you, so I have been looking for Archibald Scott and Marion Taylor in Scotland. However, the census records have Catherine Scott and her children being born in Ireland - According to my grandmother, her great grandfather John Lynn was born in Scotland and she would always say we were Scot-Irish.
You have a good point about the army!Charles Lynn enlisted in the English Army and then off to the U.S. to fight in the civil war.A newspaper article in the U.S. listed him as receiving a medal from the opium war with China (if my memory is correct). We did find a Charles Lynn receiving a medal and have a number, but don't know what to do with it.I am making an assumption when thinking that Charles joined the army, since his dad John Lynn died (where we don't know) when the children are young.Either a way to help support the family or one less mouth to feed.
Thanks for your thoughts!Happy New Year!
