QUINs of Royal Artillery, starting Thomas, b. ~1760 Armagh
I descend from a family named QUIN, who were in the Royal Artillery for at least three generations
Thomas QUIN, aged 18, was born in Armagh parish, Armagh city, Armagh county, Ireland. He joined the Royal Artillery on 02 August 1778, in Armagh.
Thomas QUIN was posted to Plymouth Dock, Devon, England,as part of the 2nd Battalion. This was where he married Charlotte MASON, after banns, in Stoke Damerel, Devon, on 04 Dec 1781. Their son John Thomas QUIN was born in Plymouth, I believe on 17 Jan 1782.
Thomas was posted to Woolwich, Kent, headquarters of the Royal Artillery in 1783. A son William QUIN, was born 18 Dec 1787 to "Thos. and Charlott", and christened at St. Mary Magdalene, Woolwich, on 18 Jan 1788.
At some point Thomas QUIN was posted to Nova Scotia. He died in Halifax in 1792 (presumably aged around 32). I do not yet know what became of his wife Charlotte QUIN, nor of their son William.
Their son John Thomas QUIN joined the Royal Artillery in Woolwich as a drummer boy, aged 11, in 1793. His name occurs in several Muster Rolls, and I have his detailed discharge documents. He remained in the Royal Artillery most of his life, rising to a driver, then a gunner, and eventually a Master Gunner. He retired aged 65, and dying shortly thereafter. I have numerous Army records for him. He was remarkably tall for his time: very close to six feet.
He married Sarah CROSS (from Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England) 03 March 1803, in Manchester. They had children John 1803, b. Uttoxeter; William 1807 b. Hull, Yorkshire; Elizabeth 1808 Hull; Sarah 1809 Hull; David 1812 Hull; George 1813 Hull; and Charlotte 1816, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland.
I have details of John Thomas and Sarah QUIN's children and their marriages. At least two joined the Royal Artillery. John died unmarried in the service in 1835. William went from army service to the civil service in the Caribbean. Further descendants are found in the Caribbean, the USA, England, and Canada.
I'm happy to correspond with other members of this QUIN family, especially if you have details of earlier generations in Armagh.
