In Reply to: Dennis Healy son of Jeremiah and Ellen (Jennings) Healy by Maura Donnelly of 94936

Hello Maura,

I found the civil birth indexes for five children of Jeremiah Healy and Ellen Jennings, including the birth index for your Denis Healy at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at: https://www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

In chronological order of the births the children are: Ellen, (1864); Denis (1866); Patrick (1868); James; (1870); and Jeremiah.

As you’ll see a little later in this reply Jeremiah and Ellen had other children before the year 1864, but there will not be birth records for these children as the Irish government did not commence with the civil registration of births, as well as marriages and deaths for all religious denominations until the year 1864. Before the year 1864 a researcher with Catholic ancestors would have to find records in church baptism and marriage registers.

Each of the five birth indexes below is accompanied by an LDS microfilm number. The microfilms will contain copies of the original birth records for the Healy children. The births of the children were all recorded in the townland of Clonmoyle, County Cork. For example, the 1866 birth record for your Denis Healy can be found on LDS microfilm number 101129.

I then located the baptism indexes for five children of Jeremiah Healy and Ellen Jennings. Unfortunately, I didn’t locate the baptism index for Denis. These indexes were found at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Cork (North & West). The IFHF homepage can be accessed at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Once at the IFHF homepage you have to first register to access the baptism indexes that I did. However, to obtain transcriptions of the baptisms you’ll have to purchase credits by credit card. More information about purchasing credits can be found at the IFHF website.

The baptism of the Healy children all took place in the Donoughmore Roman Catholic Church. These children and their dates of baptism are: Catherine (1857); Michael (1860); Joseph (1862); Patrick (1868); and Jeremiah (1872). I had to guess the first names of the children baptized before 1864, as the IFHF website did not provide this information.

The baptism indexes are below:

You could purchase the baptism transcriptions of each child individually, but that would be tedious. You can also purchase the baptisms for all five children from one index. To do this, do not include the first names of the children. In place of the first names use the % sign as a wild card. Also do not include their dates of baptism in the IFHF search engine. The search engine to order the baptism transcriptions will look like this:

5 matches for the search criteria: Healy (plus variants) % Parish: DONOUGHMORE (RC)

I next looked for, but unfortunately didn’t find the church marriage index for Jeremiah Healy and Ellen Jennings at the IFHF website. Nor did I locate their marriage index at the LDS website. Also, without knowing the names of the parents of Jeremiah Healy and Ellen Jennings, I am not able to locate their baptism indexes.

Clonmoyle and Donoughmore, County Cork, are located about four miles from each other. To see both townlands on a map, go to the Google Maps link at: http://tinyurl.com/8lsnlpn

Once at the map, go to the left-hand margin of the page, where you’ll see a prompt called “Directions” highlighted in blue. Click on the word Directions, and in the A box, type in “Donoughmore, Cork, Ireland.” Then click on “Get Directions.”

On the map that downloads you’ll see that Donoughmore, at letter A, is just north of Clonmoyle, at letter B. Next, hold your cursor over the letter B and left click on the letter. A drop-down box will appear with a “Street view” photo of Clonmoyle. Click on Street view and you’ll be able to navigate the roads of Clonmoyle where your Healy and Jennings ancestors had lived.

Next, go back to the map and click on the letter A to generate a Street view of Donoughmore. This is the townland where the Healy children were baptized. There are presently two catholic Churches in Donoughmore, St. Joseph’s and St. Lacteen’s. Photos of the St. Lacteen’s Catholic Church that I found show it to be a newer church which looks like it may have been built in the 20th century, though I don’t know if it had been built on the site of a previous church structure.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, on the other hand, is an older church. You can see this church by going to the Google Maps link at: http://tinyurl.com/95npt2o

Once at the map you’ll see a photo of St. Joseph’s Church in the left margin. Click on the photo to enlarge it, and you’ll then be able to navigate the roads surrounding the church. I don’t know if the Healy children were baptized in this church, but they may have been.

There were two places in County Cork named Donoughmore. One of these was in the Civil Parish of Donoughmore, while the other townland named Donoughmore was in the Civil Parish of Aghabulloge. Your ancestors lived in the Civil Parish of Aghabulloge, as the townland of Clonmoyle, where the births of the Healy children were recorded, was also situated in the Aghabulloge Civil Parish.

To see a Civil Parish map of Aghabulloge, go to the Irish Times link at: http://tinyurl.com/92ct9pv

Aghabulloge is number 1 on the map, and number 1 on the Map ID located on the left margin of the page.. If you click on the Civil Parish of Aghabulloge, another page will load, showing the townlands which were located in the parish. You’ll actually see two townlands named Clonmoyle. These are Clonmoyle East and Clonmoyle West. The Healys would have lived in Clonmoyle East or Clonmoyle West.

The civil birth records in the LDS microfilms for the children of Jeremiah Healy and Ellen Jennings may give you a more exact location of where the family had lived when each child was born. The baptism transcriptions from the IFHF may also tell you where the Healy family was living when each child was baptized in the Donoughmore Catholic Church, and also give you the name of the godparents for the Healy children.

Maura, I hope someday you’ll be able to visit County Cork so that you can travel the same back roads and lanes in Clonmoyle and Donoughmore that your ancestors had.

Best Wishes,

Dave Boylan
