Many thanks for this information,it's very helpful. I did find a baptism for an Allen's daughter Rachel in which it gives her mother's name as Jane Carruthers, however, I have found no marriage for the couple, and the only baptism I found for an Allen was in 1820 some 6 years after his supposed birth if the age given on the 1901 census is correct. The main issue really is linking Henry Thompson whose medals are in the family with Allen and or his ancestors or descendants. I know from Henry's service record that he was born 1822 in Killead, and I know all the places he served but there's no clue to his next of kin,all it tells me about his civilian life is that he was a 'bleacher'.

Linda
