My grandfather Thomas used the surname BOWENS when he came over from Co Mayo to Durham around 1902. BOWENS was often recorded as BONES/BOHNS/BOWNES as registrars entered names as they heard them. My great grandfather Patrick was registered as BOWENS on the Griffiths Valuation in 1856 and farmed a strip of land in BARCULL Townland. He married Margaret Dooney around 1855 in the area of Kilmovee Parish. Patrick died around 1895 and his widow Margaret BONES in the 1911 Irish Census was shown living at
House No 11 in BARCULL with her daughter Bridget. They had several children including my grandfather Thomas. My maternal grandparents James HARKIN and Catherine CALLAGHAN came from the same area and were married in Kilmovee Parish Church in 1870. Catherines father John CALLAGHAN aslo farmed a strip of land in a adjoining townland SHAMMERDOO/SHAMMERBAUN.James and Catherine had a child Mary in 1870 (died 1944) and then migrated to Byers Green Co Durham where they had several children including my grandmother Bridget. My grandfather Thomas came over to Durham around 1901 and married Bridget HARKIN in 1903 in St Patricks RC in Langley Moor Co Durham. All male members worked down the Littleburn Colliery. My father John was 1st born in 1903 and they a further 8 children. Thomas died in 1923 and Bridget died in 1924.
James HARKIN's daughter Mary married a John MORAN around 1891 and they lived in house No6 in BALLINRUMPA in Kilmovee Parish. In the 1911 census several other members of the MORAN's/BONES families were living in houses in BARCULL and BALLINRUMPA so it was a very close knit community.
I would like contact with BONES/BOHNS/HARKIN/MORAN/DOONEY/CALLAGHAN families who are searching or live in the area who believe they have information I can use and of course vice versa.
The only photos I have are from around 1888 taken in
Co Durham which are of my GM Catherine Harkin nee Callaghan with her daughters Kate and Bridget (my GM) which I can e-mail to contacts.
I can be contacted at or on
I look forward to any replies.
Best regards,
Jim Bowens (69)
