Kathleen,
One of the questions, which are always asked about the Murphy’s is, where exactly in Ireland do they come from? The quickest answer is everywhere! But for those searching for their Murphy roots that is not a very useful answer. The Griffith’s Valuation CD from Family Tree Maker, provides us with the opportunity to determine exactly where the Murphy’s were most numerous during the period between 1848 to 1864. This is a particularly critical time period because it coincides with the end of the Great Famine and the mass emigration from Ireland.

If a person did not own property, they will not appear in Griffith’s. Counter wise, it is not unusual to see members of the English Nobility lists with dozens of parcels of land. In spite of these shortcomings, Griffith’s is the only surviving record we have of that period and we can put it to good use if we understand it limitations.

In spite of these shortcomings, Griffith’s is the only surviving record we have of that period and we can put it to good use if we understand it limitations. The first thing that Griffith’s tells us is that there were a total of 14,297 parcels of land owned by Murphy’s out of a total of 1,094,771 recorded in Griffith’s and that Murphy’s are to be found in all 32 Counties. From this we can estimate that during the mid-nineteenth century, the Murphy’s were approximately 1.306% of the total population of Ireland or 130.6 property owners per 10,000 of population. Given the actual amount of property owned by the English, this number is most likely a significant understatement in terms of actual population.

At the same time we can calculate a percentage of Murphy’s in each county out of the total population of Murphy property owners in Ireland. The percentage value is very useful in formulating search strategies for those who do not know from which County, their Murphy ancestors came. Here is that list for the Murphy’s:

The Counties of Ireland varied widely in population from Co. Cork with 99,815 property owners to Co. Longford with only 13,945. With a table of the total number of property owners in each County, which was published by FTM, it is possible to take the first table and calculate the population density of Murphy’s in each County per 10,000 property owners listed in Griffith’s.In the first table Co. Cork has the largest population of Murphy’s. However, the second table shows that Co. Wexford had the highest population density of Murphy’s with 5.437% of the population having that surname. The next most densely populated Murphy County was Carlow with 4.286%, followed at last by Cork with 3.288% of the total population. As you review the next table keep in mind that the average population density of Murphy’s in all of Ireland is 130.6 property owners per 10,000, so any County with more than this number is above average.
