James B McCauley/McAuley married Elizabeth Johnson March 24,1848 in Virginia..So we know he must have arrived in the states before that...
Based on his death record, Dec 12,1878, his marker says he was 51 making his birth year 1827, but we all know that could be off a bit.
Their children were:
John 1848
James 1852
William (Mack) 1853
Edward 1856
Joseph1858
Charles 1859
George 1860
The census records of George and Edward both say James B was born in Northern Ireland. My great Aunt Kelly says that her grandfather could speak a bit of Gaelic, so we have had no reason to doubt that George's father was born in Ireland. We suspect that he came to Virginia via Pennsylvania. George was said to be the 7th son of a 7th son...
We know from his "Southern Claim" that he was not only a stone cutter/mason, but a shoemaker and carpenter as well as he claimed tools for those trades were taken by the North. George was a stone cutter/mason as well. Were there certain areas of Northern Ireland that had more stone cutters than others? Because of the famine, I can understand why he learned more than one trade, but stone cutter/mason seemed to be his main occupation...
From my understanding, during the Potato Famine, families were forced into work houses and/or emmigrated to other countries including the US. I would suspect that James B and, most likely, his brothers came over then but I can't find a record (not unusual for that time period I've heard - So many records were lost during the Civil War...)
The naming tradition is really the only thing we have to go on, although his sons' names only seem to reflect to James B's family, not Elizabeth's.
For some reason, my mother thinks that the middle initial "B" stands for Benjamin. I think that has to do with a possible brother of James' having named a son Benjamin, but I'm not really sure...
I sure do appreciate all of your help!!
Joy
