According to a tradition handed down by the older members of the Looney family in Tennessee, Temperance Cross, a small, blond Irish girl, told her grandchildren that she was engaged to marry a man in Ireland against her parents will, so much so, that they would not let him come on their farm. The last time they met he gave her a small amount of money and told her he was leaving for America, and would wait for her there and pay the remainder of her passage when she arrived.
After he had left she had a chance to come to America, so she ran away from home, taking just such clothes as she could carry and took the ship. Upon her arrival in America she failed to find her lover. Because of the lack of money to pay her passage, she was "leased out" to work for a family until she repaid them the money. She worked three years at 12 l/2 cents a day, cooking and spinning for a large family. They were kind and tried to help her find her Irish sweetheart. After she had worked out all she owed them they gave her some money with which to visit several landing places, but she never found a trace of the young man. She had to settle down and go to work.
Three years had passed, Tempa gave up hope of ever seeing her Irish sweetheart again. Soon after this she met MICHAEL LOONEY and became engaged to him. They were married in 1780 in Botetourt Co., VA.
This is our story of TEMPERANCE CROSS, wife of MICHAEL LOONEY. It is pieced together from scraps of tradition handed down through three generations of LOONEY's. We have no exact record of Tempa's birth and death. The Hawkins County, TN census of 1830 lists her in Mike's age group, 70-80 (born 1750-1755) and according to census she died 1830-1840. She preceeded Mike in death and is buried in the Looney Graveyard on the homestead.
Temperance was born in Ireland, daughter of Brittain Cross and wife, whose maiden name was Cole. We do not know the first name of Mrs. Brittain Cross, but we like to think of her as Mary. Surely Temperance would name her first girl for the mother she left in Ireland.

Does anyone have these CROSSes? I'm descended from Michael and Tempa's son, Absalom David LOONEY.
