Hello Rosemary:
For the surname Shiel (+variants) in the 26 Irish counties currently in an online database, there are 11,427 B rcds dating from about 1709, and 5,913 M rcds dating from 1743. In Co. Mayo, the respective numbers are 384, and 170.
From the large numbers of B/M rcds scattered across Ireland, the Shiel/Shields name is Gaelic-Irish, not Scotch.
Hope this helps.
