William Dugan 9/30/07
Hello Bill,
Have you obtained the death records of Bridget, Philip, and Robert Duggan who died in San Francisco? Their death records may tell you where in Ireland, perhaps Tipperary, their parents Philip and Mary were born.
Along related lines, I found through English census records, that Philip and Mary’s daughter Mary, was also born in Ireland.
Do you know what happened to her, as her death record may tell you where she was born in Ireland.
I had looked for the marriage of Philip and Mary and the baptism record of their daughter Mary in Ireland but did not find it. The search was conducted at the Latter Day Saints website at www.familysearch.org
However, you may be able to locate the birthplace(s) of Philip and Mary by obtaining five of their children’s English civil registration birth records.
I found what I believe to be the birth record indexes for Kate (Catherine); Ellen; Bridget; Philip; and Robert, based onages of the children in the 1851 and 1861 census returns for Liverpool. More on the birth indexes later.
The 1851 census, taken on the evening of 30 March 1851, shows the Duggan family living in Number 2 Francis Building, Lower Milk Street, Liverpool.
This census, as well as the 1861 census, show that Philip and Mary and their daughter Mary were all born in Ireland. The only other child in this census is Catherine, age 1, born Liverpool.
The 1851 enumerations also shows that a servant named Bridget Kelly, from Ireland, was in the Duggan household.
The census was found at the Ancestry.com subscription website.

Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths in England and Wales began in July of 1837. Knowing this I searched for Catherine Duggan’s civil birth record at the FreeBMD website at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
This site has transcribed millions of General Register Office (GRO) birth, marriages, and death indexes for England and Wales for the 19th and 20th centuries, though not all the indexes for England and Wales have as yet been transcribed, because the FreeBMD transcription program is a work in progress.
I believe I may have found Catherine Duggan’s civil birth index in the GRO indexes at the FreeBMD.
The index shows the birth of a Catherine Duggan was recorded in the June quarter of 1850 in he Liverpool Registration District. The June quarter recorded births for the months of April, May, as well as June.
I can’t be positive the index below is for the daughter of Philip and Mary Duggan, as parents names are not given in the GRO birth indexes. But, this is the only index I could find for Catherine’s birth in the GRO indexes, based on her age (1) in the 1851 census.
The full birth record for Catherine may give an exact place of birth for her parents.
The index is below:

The full birth record for Catherine can be found in Volume 20, Page 297 of the GRO registers.
If you believe the above index pertains to the daughter of Philip and Mary Duggan, you can order the full birth record from the General Register Office in Southport, England.
The record can be ordered by mail, phone, fax, or electronically. You will save the most money by ordering the birth cert electronically, paying for it by credit card. If you order the record electronically you will need to supply the Volume (20), and the Page Number (297) from the index shown above. By ordering electronically the cost of the birth record will be 7 Pounds.
For more information about the GRO go to: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
To order the certificate electronically, go to the GRO link at: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I also located Philip, Mary, and their six children in the 1861 census for Liverpool. Because some of the writing in this enumeration is difficult to read, I couldn’t decipher the street address.
Living with the family is a servant named Mary Mawdsley from Liverpool.
The 1861 census for England was enumeratedon the evening of 7 April 1861.
This census was also found at the Ancestry.com subscription website:

Next are what I believe to be the GRO birth indexes for Ellen, Bridget, Philip, and Robert Duggan. I can’t be 100% positive the indexes pertain to the children of Philip and Mary, as the parents’ names are not listed.
All of the births are shown to have been recorded in the Liverpool Registration District.
If you believe the indexes pertain to the children of Philip and Mary Duggan, order them from the GRO to see if any of them specify a county, townland, or parish of birth for their parents in Ireland.
The indexes follow:

As indicated earlier, the full birth records for the Duggan children noted above may tell you where in Ireland the parents were born. Or, the indexes may only state the parents were born in Ireland. It’s also possible the indexes won’t give a place of birth for the parents at all. You would have to order the full birth records for Catherine, Ellen, Bridget, Philip, and Robert Duggan to find out.
Also Bill, there most likely are baptism records for the five Duggan children born in England, but you would have to know which Catholic Church parish or parishes ( I am assuming the family were Catholic) in Liverpool the family had attended, to locate the baptisms.
I did not find the Duggan family altogether in the 1871 census.
I did not find a Philip Duggan, born in Ireland circa 1819, in the 1871 census for Lancashire or any other English County.
I also searched for Philip’s wife Mary and daughter Mary, but the results were inconclusive as I did not find them together in the Ancestry.com census indexes, nor did I find either Mary with the other Duggan children, Catherine, Ellen, Bridget, Philip, or Robert.
But, I did find an 1861 death index for a Philip Duggan registered in Liverpool for the December quarter of 1861, and found in Volume 8b, Page 29 of the GRO registers.
This index may pertain to the death of your Philip.
You could order the full certificate to see if Philip’s wife Mary, or one of his children are listed as an “informant” of the death. If the death record does pertain to your Philip Duggan, it may provide you with his date and place of birth in Ireland.
The index follows:

I believe Philip’s wife Mary was deceased by 1871 too, but there are too many death indexes registered under the name of Mary Duggan in the Liverpool Registration District between 1861 and 1871, that I wouldn’t know which, if any one of them would pertain to your Mary Duggan.
One of the reasons I believe both Philip and his wife Mary were deceased by 1871, is that I found what I think are two of their children, Philip and Robert, in the “Boys Orphanage Certified Industrial School,” in Liverpool.
Philip and Robert are listed on different census pages for the orphanage. There were several children in the orphanage at this time, as there are a total of ten census pages providing the names of these children.
The census lists a 15 year old John Duggan above the name Philip Duggan on page 2 of the census. Both John and Philip are shown to have been born in Liverpool.
John may have been a cousin, though I can’t prove that.
Page 1 of the census shows the head of the Orphanage is Marianne Middletown, who is listed as belonging to the Sisters of Charity, which is a Catholic order.
Page 7 of the census lists 10 year old Robert Duggan, born Liverpool.
I have not listed all the children in the orphanage in the 1871 census, which follows:

I found information about the “Liverpool Orphanage Industrial School for Catholic Boys” at the website at:

____
I also located what may be Philip and Mary’s daughter Catherine in the 1871 census.
A 21 year old Catherine Duggan, born Liverpool, is shown to be a “convict” in the Millbank Prison, London.
Catherine’s offense is not listed, nor is the street address listed in the census.
Catherine is found on page 6 of 36 pages of convicts enumerated in the Millbank Prison.
The census follows:

I also found three GRO death indexes for a Catherine Duggan, registered in the Liverpool District for the year 1865. Again, it would be impossible to tell which, if any of the indexes seen below, would pertain to the daughter of Philip and Mary, just from the index alone:

I did not find an unmarried Mary Duggan, born in Ireland circa 1843, in the 1871 census. Mary may have been married or deceased by 1871, or may have emigrated, or I may have missed her in the census altogether.
But, I did find several GRO and LancashireBMD marriage indexes for Mary Duggans registered in the Liverpool District.
Any one, or none of these indexes, could pertain to the daughter of Philip and Mary Mullaly Duggan.
And, if Mary had married by 1871, and if the marriage were recorded in another Lancashire registration district, or in another county, it would be impossible to find the marriage index for her with the limited information about her at hand.
The LancashireBMD website at http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
The Lancashire index is not the same as the GRO index.
The Lancashire BMD index, as well as their full marriage records, are held by the Superintendent Registrar’s Office in Liverpool.
Below are the GRO and Lancashire BMD indexes. You would have to order the full marriage record of each to see if any of them mention that Mary’s father was Philip:

I next located a 24 year old Philip Duggan in the 1881 census on board a ship called the Moravian, docked in Liverpool.
The census shows that Philip was a fireman on board the ship, but does not say whether the Moravian was a naval vessel or merchant ship.
The census, which was found at the LDS website, also shows that Philip was born in County Lancashire, and that he was married.

Ialso searched for the other Duggan children in the 1881 census, but did not find them.
If San Francisco death records for your Duggans do not give a specific town land of birth in Ireland for parents Philip and Mary Mulally, and if the GRO birth records do not mention the birthplace(s) in Ireland for Philip and Mary, there are other methods you can employ to try to pin down the birthplaces. These methods however, can be expensive.
The government in Ireland began civil registration in the year 1845 with the recording of Protestant marriages only.
Civil Registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations in Ireland however, did not commence until the year 1864.
Census records show that Philip, Mary, and their daughter Mary were born in Ireland
This means that information about Philip, Mary, and their daughter Mary in Ireland would have to be found in church records of baptism and marriage, as civil records of birth and marriage would not have existed at the time the three family members were born/baptized or married in Ireland, based on their ages in the 1851 and 1861 census returns shown above.
If the church records exist or go back far enough in time, the baptisms of Philip and Mary, their marriage record, and the baptism record of their daughter may be in Catholic Church parish registers.
To see if you can find where in Tipperary or other counties your ancestors may have come from, you can hire a genealogical firm in Ireland to search the parish registers for you.
The largest genealogical company in Ireland is called Eneclann, based in Trinity College, Dublin. This company has access to existing church parish registers which are held by the National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin.
For more information about church parish registers in the Library of Ireland, go to the website link at:

If you are sure your ancestors came from Tipperary, there are genealogical services you can hire to help you with your research.
The North Tipperary Genealogy and Heritage Services holds church records for the northern portion of County Tipperary.

I have never used Eneclann, but if this were my genealogy I’d probably go with this company instead of the Tipperary heritage centers’ route, as I’d wouldn’t want to undertake hit or miss searches at three different Tipperary genealogical services. The time and the expense I think would be too prohibitive.
But, keep in mind that no matter which service you use, if you decide to use any at all, there is no guarantee of results.
I next searched for Philip, his wife Sarah, and any other Duggans from England in the 1900 census for San Francisco.
I believe I found Philip, Sarah, and their four children. They were living in the household of Leo and Bridget Bagala in a street whose name I can’t make out in the enumeration.
I believe Leo Bagala’s wife was Bridget Duggan, sister of Philip, and daughter of the older Philip and Mary Mullaly Duggan..
The census shows that Philip, Sarah, and two of their children, 14 year old Rose, and 13 year old Mary, were born in England. Rose is shown to have been born in what appears to be May 1886, and Mary in April 1887.
The possible GRO birth indexes for Rose and Mary are below. The indexes show the births were recorded in the West Derby Registration District, Lancashire. This district would have been close to North Liverpool. The full birth records will tell whether or not the parents are Philip Duggan and Sarah Moore:

The 1900 census further shows two children of Philip and Sarah born in the U.S.
One of these appears to be a daughter, whose name is hard to decipher, but appears to read “Augnews,” though it may actually be Agnes. Agnes is shown to be 9 years old. The other child is a son, Robert, age 8.
Philip’s age in the census is 45, and his birth is given as what appears to be March, in the year 1855. His occupation is “Fireman S.F.F. Dept.,” which I take to mean San Francisco Fire Department.
Philip is also shown to have arrived in the U.S. in 1887, and that he was a naturalized American citizen. He is also shown to have been married 22 years as of 1900. But, the census notes that Philip’s parents were born in England, rather than Ireland.
Philip is listed as Leo Bagala’s brother-in-law, while Sarah is listed as Leo’s sister-in-law. The relationship of Philip’s and Sarah’s children to Leo is given as either niece or nephew.
Sarah is shown to have been born in 1867 in England, and to be 33 years of age, married 22 years, and to have born four children, four of whom were still alive as of the 1900 census.
Her birth year of 1867 and age of 33 in the 1900 enumeration does not appear to make sense, as she would have been only 12 years old when she married Philip Duggan in 1879, though I suppose anything is possible.
Sarah’s parents are shown to have been born in England.
Sarah, like Philip, is shown to have immigrated to the U.S. in 1887. Two of their children, Rose and Mary, are also shown to have immigrated in 1887, which indicates all four family members left England together in 1887.
In addition the census shows that Philip, Sarah, and their children could read, write, and speak English.
Leo Bagala’s wife Bridget is shown to have been born in February of 1856 in England. She is also shown to be 44 years old, and having no children in her 25 years of marriage. She is shown to have immigrated to the U.S. in 1874, and that she could read, write, and speak English.
If the census is correct as to the number of years Bridget had been married, her marriage would have taken place in 1875, a year after her arrival in North America.
Leo Bagala is shown to be the head of the household in the 1900 census. His age is given as 54, and he is shown to have been born in Italy in August of 1840. He is shown to have been married 25 years. His year of arrival in the U.S. is given as 1853 and his number of years in the U.S. is shown to be 47. His occupation is shown to be in the restaurant business.
The census also shows Leo can read, write, and speak English and that he owns his own home.
In fact, it appears his home is also a lodging house as several borders are listed in the household, whose occupations range from waiters and clerks, to machinists.
The street where Leo and Bridget Bagala and Philip and Sarah were residing in San Francisco is hard to make out. It appears to be Johan Street, or Poham Street, but I can’t be sure of that. The house number of the dwelling however, is shown to be 2801.
If you would like a copy of the actual census, I can send it to your private email address as an attachment.
I next looked for Philip, Sarah, and their children in the 1910 census for San Francisco and the rest of California, but did not find them, except I believe I did find Rose in the census. More about Rose a little later.
I found Leo and Bridget Bagala in the 1910 census living in San Francisco, but I can’t make out the name of their street, neither could I decipher what Leo’s occupation was.
Thiscensus shows that Bridget was 55 years old, married for what appears to be 25 years. The census also shows she had never had children, that she was born in England, that her parents were born in Ireland, and that she immigrated to the U.S. in what appears to be the year 1872. No occupation is listed for Bridget.
Leo is shown to be the head of the family, 69 years old, married for what appears to be 25 years, and born in Italy, as were his parents. His year of immigration to the U.S. seems to be 1851. He is also shown to be a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Once again, I can’t make out Leo’s occupation.
The 1910 census for Rose M. Dugan shows she is a lodger in the household of Charles H., and Julia M. Leonard and their son Martin M., living at 1605 Scott Street, San Francisco. Also in the household are two other lodgers whose names appear to be Ella May Knorre, and Isabelle E. Higgins.
Rose is shown to be 23 years old, single, and born in England. Her parents are shown to have been born in England. Rose’s occupation is given as a telephone operator in an “exchange.”
Moving to the 1920 census, I found Bridget Bagala and her brother Philip F. “Dugan” still living in San Francisco, though as with the previous enumerations, I could not tell what the name of the street is.
Bridget is shown to be the head of the household, who owned her own home, but that the home had a mortgage on it.
She is shown to be a 65 year old widow who immigrated to the U.S. in 1871, and that she was a naturalized citizen. Her year of naturalization is not given.
Bridget is shown to have been born in England but that both her parents were born in Ireland. Her occupation is listed as “None.”
Philip is shown to be the 62 years old “Brother” to Bridget. His marital status however is illegible. He is shown to have immigrated in 1876, and is also shown to be a naturalized citizen, and that his naturalization took place in 1892.
Philip is shown to have been born in England. His parents are shown to be born in Ireland. His occupation, like his sister’s, is listed as “None.”
The 1930 census shows that Bridget Bagala is still the head of the household and that her brother Philip F. “Dugan” is still residing with her. Also in the house is Philip’s 45 or 46year old daughter Rose. The location of the household is 830 Stanyan Street, San Francisco. Portions of Stanyan Street border the eastern perimeter of Golden Gate Park
The location of Stanyan Street can be seen at the GoogleMaps link at: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Stanyan+St,+San+Francisco,+CA,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=titlehttp://maps.google.com/maps?q=Stanyan+St,+San+Francisco,+CA,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title
830 Stanyan Street appears to be an apartment, as several other families are shown to be living in this location.
These include the Blackwell, DeBernardi, Wiehr, and Bailey families.
Bridget Bagala is shown to be the head of the household. The census shows she owns the house which is valued at $12,000. The census also shows Bridget owned a radio, is a 76 year old widow who was married at the age of 19. She is shown to have been able to read and write.
Her birthplace is listed as England, while her parents are shown to have been born in Ireland. The census states “un” or unkown for her immigration year and whether or not she had become a naturalized American citizen. “None” is given for Bridget’s occupation.
Bridget’s brother Philip a 73 year old widower who could read and write. The census shows he was born in England, but ironically shows his parents were also born in England. The year of his immigration and his naturalization status are listed as “un.”
Philip is shown to be“retired” from “civil service.”
Rose M. Duggan is shown to be 45 or 46 years old (difficult to make out the exact age), and to be single. However, the census gives her age of her first marriage as 22 years old, which does not appear to make sense, though she may have been married at one time and have reverted back to her maiden name. The census shows she could read and write English, and was born in England. But, the census shows her parents were born in Ireland. Her year of immigration and naturalization are given as “un.”
Her occupation is shown to be a “Saleslady” in a “Dry Goods Store.”
An overview of your genealogy shows the challenges you face in your research, as your ancestors had lived in three different countries, including Ireland, England, and the United States; four countries if you include research into the collateral Bagala line from Italy, the line in which Bridget Duggan married into, though indications are this line may have died out if the census returns are accurate in stating that in her years of marriage to Leo, Bridget did not have any children..
In closing, before ordering any records from the GRO or the Liverpool Registrar’s office, I’d recommend finding the same indexes I did concerning your ancestors, at the FreeBMD and LancashireBMD websites. This will give you a chance to explore these indexes on your own and perhaps find indexes that I missed or correct any errors I may have made in assumptions about whether or not the indexes pertain to your particular Duggan line.
I also recommend doing as much family research on your own before hiring any particular genealogical company to research for you.
But, if San Francisco death records and English birth and death records do not tell you where in Tipperary or where in Ireland your Duggan and Mulally lines came from, you might want to consider help from a research company in Ireland that has access to country-wide church parish registers.
Best of Luck with your research Bill.
