I haven't found Henry on the 1850 census, and I'm not sure if he was in Philadelphia at the time, or in New Jersey. My grandmother said that after arriving in Philadelphia, Henry had worked in different places in New Jersey before finally settling in Philadelphia.I haven't found him in New Jersey census records for 1850 yet, either. One of my dad's cousins has Henry's naturalization certificate (which I was able to make a copy of), which states that he became a citizen in 1854 in Philadelphia, so he was apparently in that city by 1854.Some census records say that he came to the U. S. in 1849, while some (I don't recall how many & I'm typing from work rather than from home) say that he immigrated in 1854.I think that 1849 is probably the correct immigration year, since the certificate said that an immigrant had to be in the country for at least 5 years. It doesn't say where in Ireland Henry came from, and I haven't written to the National Archives for the file to see if it has more than just a copy of the certificate I already have.
The Henry Morrow you asked about, who appears on several censuses as a grocer, is the person I'm trying to find more information about. His wife's maiden name was McMillan, but I know even less about her than I know about Henry.I know she had younger brothers named George and Robert, who I've found on a couple of censuses, but I haven't been able to identify their parents on census records.I wouldn't even have known about George, except he & his family are buried near Henry and Mary Morrow (close enough to make it seem fairly certain that there was a family connection).I haven't searched any church records for Henry's marriage, mostly because I haven't gotten around to trying to figure out which churches were near where he lived in Philadelphia. His grocery store and residence were apparently in the same building, and if I remember correctly (without being able to check my records) it was at 1648 Tasker Street.I'm not sure what religion he was, but I think it may have been Methodist -- I found my grandmother and a few of her relatives in church records between 1900 and 1910, and I think the church's name was Scott Methodist Church.I guess that's a good place to start looking for Henry's marriage.
I hadn't thought about trying to look for birth records for Henry's children, as a way of finding out where Henry was from -- I'll have to try that as well. From what you've said about records in Ireland, it sounds like I'll have a difficult time tracing that line even if I find out what town Henry was from. That's part of the fun of genealogy, though (at least for me) -- trying to solve such riddles.
Thank you for your suggestions and information.
