Hello Kathleen,
Thanks for responding to my message. I have actually been researching this line for a close family friend. It is proving difficult to find information which can be verified, particularly as there is a change in the surname that was used. At the moment I am trying to find out if there were any siblings of James Lee (the junior one!)to see if I can find a way to his parents through one of them.Although it seems fairly certain that he was born at Upper Froyle, near Alton in Hampshire around 1866/7 (evidence from his naval record which I have and the 1891/1901 censuses)the birth was not registered with GRO.I cannot find him on IGI records either.
In the case of James Lee(senior)the story in the family is that he absconded from a ship at Liverpool whilst absent from the Irish Army and this is when he is thought to have changed his surname. Exactly how, or when, he made his way to Hampshire is not known. Our friends believe that the family originated from Tralee; I can't remember my geography of Ireland precisely at the moment, is it near Clifden ?. Can you tell me what dates your great-grandfather and family have; we may find a link yet.
Thank you again for your information.
Andrew
