It is probable he was one of the British recruits that joined the RIC in 1920 and became known as the Black and Tans. There were two sections to the Policeforce [not counting the Dublin Metropolitan force]. The RIC,which a number of British ex-servicemen joined. These were usually from the junior ranks of the forces. Then there was the Auxillary division [which a lot of people mistakenly call Black and Tans]. These were also ex-servicemen but were made up of ex-officers.
I had a quick look on the 1914-18 war medal index cards but couldn't find a Sydney Kelsby,there being about 20 in all.
The records for the RIC exist for all men and are held in the National Archives [Public Records] Kew.
The myth of the B&T's was far greater than their actions,as was intended.
