Just to add another tid bit, a lot of the Irish went to Canada first, then to the U.S.The reason being that if they came directly to the U.S., they had to buy a round-trip ticket, just in case they weren't allowed to enter and had to be sent home.Canada was part of Great Britain's property, thus they only had to buy a one-way ticket, which was a lot cheaper, then they migrated from Canada to the U.S. at no additional cost.My relatives arrived in Canada and worked a couple of years there, in order to afford to bring the rest of the family over and then migrated to the U.S.
The ordeal they had to go through to come over here, almost makes "discovering the West" in the U.S. sort of easy!
