Hi,
Thanks so much for that information.I am curious as to whether or not I am related to your family, unfortunately there are no dates specified.I include information on my DEIGHAN's to see whether there is a link.
1) Patrick DEIGHAN, died 1826.Left a widow, mentioned in 1831 census as living in Drumeil (Aghadowey), Co. Derry. The family were farmers & had 3 sons & 3 daughters (unsure?)One son was:-
1.1) James DEIGHAN / DICKSON, born 1820 in Landagivey, Co. Derry. He married Catherine DEMPSEY.They had at least 13 children, many of whom emigrated to California, 1 emigrated to London with his family & 1 emigrated to Glasgow with his family. The family name was changed from DEIGHAN to DICKSON probably to avoid discrimination as the family were Catholics & wanted to buy more land, build a farmhouse & purchase a pub in Ballymoney.
1.2) The 13+ children mentioned above were born DEIGHAN on the birth certificates, although their marriage & death certificates usually had the name DICKSON, suggesting the name change was around 1860-1880.The children were born around 1840-1865 in Bendooragh or Ballymoney, County Antrim, where the business was, or some in Landagivey/Drumale/Aghadowey/Agivey, Co. Derry where the farm was.
The original DEIGHAN's may have come from Magilligan (Tamlagthard) on the coast in Co. Derry.
Could these people be related to you?
