What does Jno stand for????????

Help,

I've only recently starting researching my wife's Irish roots from Monaghan county around 1750 to 1830. I've found a number of male's first names listed as Jno (not just my wife's family, lots of other families too). These are not original records, but typewritten transcripts. I don't think Jno stands for John, since there are lots of John's fully spelled.

Anyone have any idea what Jno could stand for.

Thanks,

Henry
