I'm Searching for information on the following family names: Ferguson, Dunning, English, McTear, and Hanna in the 1800-1860 time period in County Down, primarily in the Killyleagh and Newtownards areas, but possibly in Barony of Upper Antrim in County Antrim. The only definitive information I have on the Ferguson family is: 1. The 1863 Griffith's Valuation shows a William Ferguson living at 15 Irish St in Killyleagh 2. The youngest child of William Ferguson (II) was born in Killyleagh on 12/2/1865. 3. The family migrated to the Whitinsville area of Massachusetts in 1871. 4. The death record for Agnes English shows her parents as Robert English and Ellen McTear Here's my current knowledge of the family's genealogy: 1. William Ferguson (I) - b. about 1782 - 1802 __+ Elizabeth Dunning - b. about 1784 - 1804 ____Married - ? __2. William Ferguson (II) - b. 11/3/1822, Ireland; d. 11/12/1890, Whitinsville, MA ____+ Agnes English - b. 1826 (est.), Ireland; d. 1903, Whitinsville, MA ______Married - ? ____3. Ellen - b. 1857 (est.), Ireland; d. ?,? ______+ Thomas H. McGill - b. 1855 (est),?; d. ?,? __________Married ?,?; ? children ____3. Jane - b. 1861 (est.), Ireland; d. ?,? ______+ ? ____3. Margaret - b. 1864 (est), Ireland; d. ?,? ______+ ? ____3. Elizabeth - b. 12/2/1865, Killyleagh, Ireland; d. ?,? ______+ ? I was able to visit the area in the Spring of 2001 with my son. While there we visited the public libraries in both Killyleagh (a small town) and Newtownards (a lot larger place). In the 1863 Griffith's Valuation for Killyleagh we found only one Ferguson listed; William who lived at 15 Irish St. In the 1863 Valuation for Newtownards there were 6 Williams and numerous other Fergusons listed. Unfortunately, the valuation contain no names of family members, but since William and Agnes had a daughter (Elizabeth) born in Killyleagh in 1865 (the year BMD recording started) it was likely our William resided in Killyleagh although he may have lived in other locations in the area prior to 1863. The Ferguson surname is common in other areas of County Down, particularly the Newtownards area, as well as the Barony of Upper Antrim in County Antrim, so Williams parents could have been from either area. I do not have a date for the marriage of William and Agnes. Also, Agnes shows as both Nancy and Annie on US census records. Ann may have been her middle name, or a nickname for Agnes. The naturalization record for William shows his birthdate as 11/3/1820; his gravestone shows it as 11/3/1823 (who really knows on some of these dates). Notify Administrator about this message?
