The most reliable authority on the origin of Irish surnames was Dr. Edward MacLysaght, late Chief Herald, who had access to the old manuscripts and annals. His summaries, printed as "Irish Families" and "More Irish Families" are still considered definitive.
"Irish Families" pages 110-111 details the origin of the Kearney / Carney surnames.Whilst Kearney is evenly distributed around the country, he judges that Carney is specific to County Mayo.
