George, thanks for your ideas.I believe that William and Mary Eaton came into the port of New York prior to 1850 because they appear in that census.Since all three children were born in Ireland, it had to be late 1848 or 1849 when they arrived. They settled in New Haven, CT, basically next door. And it is quite possible, since this was the famine time when so many left Ireland, that they went first to England.I do know that lots of Irish folk went first to Liverpool to take ship for America.Since they may well have come that way, they obviously had a little money because the passage fare to America was more than the fare to Canada.
I have not found an arrival record in New York yet.Do you know of any passenger list sites online that might have them?I've looked at everything I can find with no luck so far.Are there passenger lists for departees from Liverpool? Were any other ports, like Bristol, sending Irish to New York?
I'm wondering, if they did go to Liverpool or another port nearby, if that is a clue that they came from an eastern county in Ireland, such as Wexford, which someone mentioned as a possibility.Certainly my other ancestors who lived in rural Limerick, took ship from the city of Limerick, though they landed in Canada before going on to Massachusetts. Is it more likely, do you think, that crossing over to Liverpool or Bristol meant they came from a county on the eastern coast of Ireland?
Thanks so much for your suggestions.I do appreciate anything that will help me look in the right direction.
