John ATKINS and Ann LOVELL m. 1818 County Cork, r. Dublin
My ancestor John ATKINS was born in England in early 1791.He died 17 September 1879 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA, at age 88 years, 6 months 15 days according to his newspaper obituary and Spring Grove Cemetery records. That calculates to a birth date of2 March 1791.Although this record states he was born in Ireland other records show England as his native country.
John married Anne LOVELL in 1818 in County Cork according to an undocumented member submission #1903923 at familysearch.org.Ann’s Spring Grove cemetery record states she was born in Ireland but no precise birth date is given. She died on 20 June 1852 of Cholera at age 52, so that places her birth about 1799 or 1800.Wonderful surprise discovery, her father was William LOVELL.
So my guess is he came from England, married in County Cook where the LOVELL family resided, then moved to the area 20 miles west of Dublin. There at least some of his children (there were at least 2 or 3 sons, piano tuners or music teachers) were born:
Thomas ATKINS, born 1820-21, no death record found yet so unsure of parents
- (note: Thomas may be one of John’s sons but this is unconfirmed)
- wife Elizabeth was born about 1822-23
- two children John (1843-44) James (1845-46) born Ireland
- Mary, Kate, Thomas, Ellen born in Ohio starting 1850
Benjamin ATKINS, born 21 Mar 1828, died 08 Oct 1904
- wife Jane LESLIE born 14 Aug 1831 near Coleraine,Northern Ireland.
Richard Lovell ATKINS, born 16 Feb 1834, died 22 Apr 1928
- wife Anna Sophia WARNER born 1835 in Ohio, USA
- (note most other sources indicate his birth as 1836)
In the late 1840s they emigrated to America, possibly through the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since they are said to have lived briefly in nearby Allentown to the northwest.I have not yet found any of them there in the 1850 census.By 1852 they were in Cincinnati, Ohio, as that is where Ann is buried.
After 24 years of research, my mother said, don’t you remember I told you they lived 20 miles west of Dublin?Oops! So I’m gathering all my notes and here’s the summary. This post contains all I know of the Ireland facts and clues so far.Can you help me find records on any of these LOVELL and ATKINS families, whether in County Cork or west of Dublin, perhaps in counties Kildare or Meath?(If any costs, please contact me first for approval.)
