I've not seen "free" Ireland as a designation on the 1930 census, but am sure it refers to the Irish Free State.
Ireland was partitioned in the '20s. The 1930 census asked people of Irish birth whether they came from Northern Ireland or from the Irish Free State.Twenty-six counties became the Irish Free State, and the other six remained under British dominion. So your McCreas came from somewhere in what is now the Irish Republic.
