Hello Josie,
I thought I'd reply to your message because I'm just starting out with researching my family who came from Ireland to Bolton in Lancashire, England.I believe that they would have travelled over in the early 1850s or before.
I have a Thomas and Marie (Maria) Brown who were both born in Ireland in the early 1830s.Their first child would be born around 1854 / 55 and by that time they seem to be living in Bolton.
On the 1871 census, Thomas and Maria have their birthplaces listed as Mayho, Ireland.By the 1901 census that seems to be a misspelt Drogheda, Ireland.
I really don't know the connection yet, but on the 1891 census, they have their 14 year old niece living with them, a Margaret Anderson born in Ringley, Lancashire.
I've just found what I think is her on the 1881 census living in Farnworth (that's just outside Bolton) with her father, a James Anderson age 43 whose birthplace is listed as Ireland.
