Mullen -----Ireland to Scotland early 1800's

I have been fairly successful in tracing my ancestors back to the early - mid 1800's. I have come to a stop because I suspect that they came from Ireland. They all seem to be coal miners from the above area. It goes something like this:
my grandfather-
Francis Mullen born 1921 9still alive.
his mother and father
Bernard Mullen born 1895 & Jane Hamilton.
his mother & father
Francis Mullen born 1859 & Mary Anne Boyle.
his mother & father
Robert Mullen born unknown & Ellen Calligan

Ellen im sure is from Ireland but Im not sure where Robert was born. I am Olso told that there may be a USA connection somewhere in there.

Any Help appreciated.

Kevin
