Okay Annette I see we are talking about two different Dr. Joseph Kennedy's.
The Joseph Kennedy that I am "possibly" related to is the husband of Esther Curran. He had 3 sons, Joseph, Samuel and Joseph, Jr. He is documented as arriving in Mecklenburg about 1766 where he buys land for his home. Later that same year he buys furniture and things for his Tavern and the treatment of his patients.
The reason we are sure that this Dr. Joseph was the first is due to his will of 1777. The land and all that is bought around this time is mentioned in his will. Most of it left ot his wife, Esther, and his 3 sons. There was some of it that was sold. Ephraim Brevard serves as co-executor of the estate, which shows that they worked together. The book on Colonial Physicians showing him coming next as a physician after Joseph.
Your Joseph from what I have studied did not die in Mecklenburg but moved on to Abbeville, South Carolina. Like you said his father probably was William.
