Eyre Castle no longer exists it was in the town of Eyrecourt, Galway , built by John Eyre who was granted lands around it from Cromwell. John built it over ther remains of an O'Madden castle who up until his takeover had been the lords of the Hi Manny tribe. His wife was a Hugenout and furnished it with many fine French things. Only the gate exists for the townhouse castle he built. The Eyres also maintained an army barracks there which still stand as public storage houses. My ancestors Martin, William and Michael Larkin born nearby in the area of the ruined O'Madden castle at Dun an Achta enlisted in the 66th regiment of Foot in 1813 stationed in Eyrecourt. I have a few photos of Eyrecourt town now very short of inhabitants instead of it former glory. The Eyres erected the first Opera House theatre in Ireland (still there)
