The Mac Cogans / Irish - Mac Cogadhain / Cuchogaidh - hound of war / were a Sept / Family branch – who had their Native Irish territory originally in Co. Leitrim.They were also to be found in Co. Laois / Queens Co.
The Cogans or Coggans / Anglo – Norman / De Cogan or Decogan came into Ireland from Wales with Strongbow in the 1170’s and settled in Co. Cork where they were also Lords there. Later some of them changed their name to Gogan and Goggin. The name was it was also used as a synonym of Coogan.
The O Coogans / Irish - Ui Cuagain were a Sept - Family branch – of the Ui Maine Tuath / True Family – who had their original Native Irish territory in Co. Galway & Co. Roscommon. They were also eventually scattered into Co. Monaghan and Co. Kilkenny and the surrounding region.
