A quick search through my FTM index shows only two PORTER ancestors after our patriarch "Wm Allen Porter" who also bear the middle name of Allen; Wm's first son Nathan Haley had a son Leonard Allen with his first wife Sarah Bush. Then with his 2nd wife, Affie Delilah Nutter, he had a son Wm Allen Porter Jr.Also Wm's 3rd son, brother of Nathan, was Allen Porter (middle name unknown).
Further information just heard was that it may have been 4 Irish Porter brothers (not 7), and that they must have hit America's shores a-runnin' - they split up and scattered to the winds. One going North, another South, the other two taking East (that couldn't have been very far without getting wet) and West.I'm guessing this must have been in mid-to-late 1700s but could have been earlier.I don't have a clue if these brothers were 1, 2 or more generations removed from my ggg-gf Wm Allen Porter.Well, thanks for the update Lane, perhaps we'll graft a twig on one tree or the other before its all done.If you haven't perused my online file, please do so and I'll watch out for more Allens.BTW my Wm Allen seems to have gone by "Allen" more than "William" anyway - at least as far as KS census takers were concerned.
Tidbit: There's a family story that we're related to a somewhat famous Henry K. Porter, a blacksmith who invented and patented the double-action cutting jaws found on most boltcutters today. In 1880 he formed the tool company H K Porter in Boston which is now owned by Cooper Tools. But there is another perhaps more famous Henry K. (Kirke) Porter, who built locomotives from about 1860-1950s.That H K Porter company, Pittburgh, PA was the 3rd largest locomotive maker in the US.Henry Kirke Porter was a PA representative, instrumental in forming the YMCA, along with many other accomplishments. He was born in Concord, NH 1840.The search goes on... enjoy!
