Patricia, This might be of some further interest to you in your Irish search.
The Mac Gilligans / Irish - Mac Giollagains / giolla – meaning -lad - were a leading Sept / Family branch - who had their original Native Irish territory in Co. Derry in the Ulster Province.Their name was sometimes abbreviated to Gillan. In North Co. Derry, adjacent to Loch Foyle is Magilligan’s Strand.
There was also another Sept of the Mac Gilligans in the ancient kingdom of Airgialla / Oriel in the Ulster Province composed of Co. Armagh,Co. Tyrone, Co. Monaghan and Co. Louth. The Mac Gilligans were also Chiefs in the north in Co. Longford in the Leinster Province close to Ulster.
